Program Description

Description

Join the West Hartford Caribbean American Heritage Committee to kick off Caribbean American Heritage Month with a performance by the Caribbean American Dance Company, followed by a screening of the award-winning documentary Diggers (1985).

About the Film

The Panama Canal, an engineering feat that has been hailed as the “eighth wonder of the world,” took thirty-three years to build (1881-1914) and the loss of 30,000 lives. Diggers chronicles the political, social, and technological history of the Panama Canal and the forgotten 100,000 Black laborers from the Caribbean who built it. Archival footage and stills are enhanced by interviews with surviving workers, who describe their struggles against dangerous working conditions, unfair labor practices, racist policies, and a denial of their contributions by the United States and Panama. Movie runtime is 1 hour 30 minutes.

Registration required. Registration will open one month before the program at 7:00pm.
