Program Description

CATS vs. DOGS: TAILS of WEST HARTFORD is the theme of a juried community art show at the Noah Webster Library Gallery, 20 South Main Street, West Hartford, Connecticut. The art show will run from December 1 , 2020, through February, 2021.

Applicants are invited to submit artwork of a cat or a dog (or artwork expressive of cats or dogs) from SEPTEMBER 1 through OCTOBER 5, 2020. Mixed media entries are also welcome. Cats and dogs depicted must have West Hartford tails - that is, they must currently or previously lived in (or visited) West Hartford. Put another way, all dogs and cats must have a West Hartford connection of some sort. The artists submitting their work, however, do not have to live in West Hartford.

Three cash prizes will be awarded: 1st: $300, 2nd: $200, 3rd: $100. Funded by the Thomas F. Kilfoil Memorial Bequest, West Hartford Library Foundation.

Each applicant must also include a short written piece of 50-150 words for each submission describing in personal terms the significance of the dog(s) or cat(s) depicted in the submitted artwork.

STEP ONE: Submit Your Proposal
Please submit your proposal via email, any time from September 1 through October 5, a photo or sketch of your artwork (in the form of a jpg) for review. Your submitted jpg should be that of a completed work, though proposals will be accepted if accompanied by an image of another finished piece done in the same style. Up to two submissions per artist will be accepted for consideration - each must be submitted separately (not grouped together) to be considered. Submissions received before September 1, 2020, will not be considered.

Email your proposal to: with ART - Tails of West Hartford in the subject line. Upon receipt you will receive a confirmation email.

Proposals must include all of the following:
• A single image (jpg) of the proposed artwork,
• your written submission of 50-150 words,
• the work’s title,
• the medium of the work, and
• the finished dimensions (finished dimensions should include the frame if a frame is needed; some paintings on professional canvases do not require framing),
• the artist’s name (official, for publication purposes),
• the artist’s full street mailing address (the artist does not have to be from West Hartford),
• the artist's phone number,
• the artist’s email address.

Artists, please limit yourself to no more than two submissions. Submissions are open to artists of all ages, but please note that this is not a children’s art show. Young artists may submit, but all works will be judged within the same criteria.

Jury Process and Criteria:
A jury of artists will look at submissions and assess them according to two criteria:
1) level of technical ability within the medium,
2) emotional impact.
Works that are incomplete of either an image or a written submission will be deemed ineligible. Up to thirty artists will be selected for inclusion in the gallery show.

Artists selected for the Art Show will be notified of acceptance by November 2, 2020.

STEP TWO: Deliver Your Work
Artists whose work has been accepted must arrange to have their work delivered to the main gallery of the Noah Webster Library on Saturday, November 21, 2020, between 10:00am – 2:00pm. Work will be received by the library only at the appointed time. It is the artist’s responsibility to make sure that the work is ready to be displayed, for example, well framed, ready for hanging with proper wiring on the back of the piece.

The show will run for three months beginning Tuesday, December 1, 2020. An artists' reception with prizes is scheduled for the Noah Webster Library Gallery, 20 South Main Street, on Thursday, January 14, 2021
