In this talk Joyce Ashuntantang, poet and professor originally from The Republic of  Cameroon and a graduate from schools in three continents - Africa, Europe and North America, discusses the impact of crossing borders and the changing sense of self that comes with it. Joyce was born and raised in the former British Southern Cameroons where she imbibed British culture and education as part of her upbringing. She then crossed to the French speaking section of Cameroon to attend the only university in the country at the time. That crossing left lasting scars and marked her as minority within her own country. In the last 30 years and counting, she has had additional border crossings within Cameroon and beyond - including her crossing into the United States where she now resides. In this talk Joyce will look at her journey(s) from myriad angles as she tries to understand who she has become and in the process give us all a chance to examine our own sense of identity.

Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang received a B.A in Modern English Studies with a minor in Theater Arts from the University of Yaoundé Cameroon, a Masters in Librarianship from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and a Ph.D. in English on African Literature from the City University of New York. Dr. Ashuntantang is Associate Professor of English at the University of Hartford.
