Program Description

Description

James Wallace Pine is one of the millions of individuals that contributed to West Hartford's history. To those that knew him, Pine was a hat maker, poet, historian, minister, militia organizer, and dairy man, and his family was a West Hartford fixture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But do you know James Pine?

Born and raised in a colony of free Blacks in the slave state of Connecticut, Pine led a life few could have dreamed of in the Victorian age, let alone at a time when millions of his fellow Black Americans were enslaved. Local History Librarian Brett Freiburger will share the story of this man that found support and success in a young, growing community, followed by a facilitated discussion with Adrienne Billings-Smith.

Registration required. Registration opens one month before the program at 7:00pm.

Hosted in partnership with the Town of West Hartford's Office of Employee Development & Community Engagement.
