Program Description

Description

Join us for a parenting workshop on Helping Children Cope with Trauma with Dr. Lang, Clinical Psychologist at the Child Health and Development Institute.

Many children are exposed to potentially traumatic events and experiences as they grow up. These can include violence, abuse, loss of or separation from loved ones, accidents, natural disasters, and many other types of events.  Children often experience a range of responses to these events, including emotional, behavioral, cognitive, social, and/or physical reactions. Parents, caregivers, and other loved ones are essential for helping children heal and recover following adversity.  However, talking about trauma and figuring out what to do can be difficult and confusing, especially with children. This presentation and discussion will begin with information and research about what is known about the effects of childhood trauma exposure and how to best support children and families who may experience trauma. We will have time for Q&A, discussion, and sharing resources and ideas.

Dr. Jason Lang is a licensed clinical psychologist who serves as the Vice President for Mental Health Initiatives at the Child Health and Development Institute and holds faculty appointments at UCONN Health and the Yale Child Study Center.  His work focuses on improving the quality of children’s behavioral health services across the state, with a particular focus on childhood trauma and increasing availability of evidence-based interventions. Dr. Lang graduated from Tufts University, received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA, and completed his fellowship in child traumatic stress at the Yale Child Study Center.

Registration is requested but drops-ins are welcome.
