The lecture will explain a brief history of the animal rights movement; philosophical bases for animal rights; the distinction between animal rights and animal welfare; recent attempts to secure rights for animals and to advance animal welfare; and 3 "hot topics" in animal advocacy - (1) the use of victim advocacy programs, like CT's first in the nation Desmond's Law, for animal cruelty cases, (2) the use of ag-gag laws to try to limit access to factory farm operations; and (3) the development of alternatives to animal-based food and research models. 

Professor Jessica Rubin is the Director of UConn Law School’s Animal Law Clinic and UConn Law School’s Legal Practice Program. She teaches Animal Law and was instrumental in creating Desmond’s Law, which allows Connecticut courts to appoint advocates for justice in animal cruelty cases.  She received a 2017 University of Connecticut Award for Public Engagement and a 2018 Animal Legal Defense Fund Animal Defender Award, and she was the 2019 inductee into the Connecticut Humane Society’s Gertrude O. Lewis Humanitarian Society.  She is a graduate of Cornell University and Cornell Law School.
