Program Description

Description

Do you find recycling confusing? Do you want to understand what is and isn’t allowed in curbside recycling? Join West Hartford’s Recycling Coordinator, Katherine Bruns, for a dynamic and informative presentation on waste and recycling in Connecticut. With the state facing a growing waste crisis—nearly 40% of Connecticut’s trash is now trucked out of state—this program will explain where our trash and recycling actually go, what recycling symbols really mean, why recycling rules change, and how West Hartford’s food scrap recycling programs work. Katherine will also introduce important concepts like greenwashing and wish-cycling, share practical tips for reducing waste at home and in everyday life, and leave plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Katherine Bruns, West Hartford’s first Recycling Coordinator, brings a lifelong passion for sustainability and education to her role. A longtime West Hartford resident with a background in international education, composting, and gardening, she works to address Connecticut’s waste crisis through public education, recycling initiatives, and the town’s food scrap and school composting programs. Katherine also serves on state recycling committees and enjoys hiking, gardening, running, and traveling in her free time.

Registration required. Registration opens one month before the program at 7:00pm.
