Grades 6-12: Teens are invited to submit work to our first-ever TEEN SUMMER WRITING CONTEST. Original poems, short stories, and essays will be accepted and must follow the following guidelines:
- Entries must be original work submitted by West Hartford students and residents in grades 6-12.
- No school assignments will be accepted.
- Teens may enter multiple categories.
- Poetry - Up to 2 poems may be submitted per author. They may be any style or length.
- Short Story - Limit one story per author. It may be any genre, 2500 words or less.
- Essay/Memoir - Limit one essay or memoir per author. It may be any theme, 2500 words or less.
- Each submission should include a cover sheet with: 1) Author Name, 2) Title, 3) Grade, 4) School, 5) Email. Names should not be included on any other pages, as work is judged anonymously.
- Email to teenpoetry@westhartfordlibrary.org by midnight on August 31.
- Poems, short stories and essays will be judged by library staff.
- When applicable, winners will be selected in the middle school (6-8) and high school (9-12) levels for each category.
- Winners will be announced in September and will receive a $25 gift card.
- Winning entries will be posted on the West Hartford Libraries web page under the winner's first name, grade, and school.
