THURSDAY - Poet Wallace Stevens, who lived in Hartford for nearly forty years, is among the half-dozen greatest American poets. However, compared with most of his peer-group (Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, etc.), he is more admired, from a distance, than read -- the reason being the perceived difficulty or inaccessibility of his writing. In this ninety-minute discussion, Professor David Rosen will confront Stevens's difficulty head-on, reading through a few poems from his late period, when he arguably wrote his best and thorniest work. We will also listen, via archived audio, to Stevens reading his own late poems.
