Description
Music historian Jeffrey Engel will explore Francis Poulenc's Les Dialogues des Carmelites in the final Opera Talk of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2018-2019 season.
Francis Poulenc was a 20th century composer, but his music does not reflect the modernistic trends of his day. Instead of being influenced by atonality and dissonance, Poulenc was a confirmed melodist and a believer in key signatures. His music is marked by great charm, wit, eloquence and echoes of the 18th century. Not surprisingly, Les Dialogues is one of the very few post-Puccini operas to remain in the international repertory.

Engel, a music professor at Northwestern Connecticut Community College who has played cello with the Paris Opera, will play songs from each opera, talk about the historical context, composer and story to give attendees a deeper understanding of the piece. The schedule coincides with the Metropolitan Opera’s global broadcast of the performances, including cinemas in Connecticut.
