Trees of West Hartford - Choosing Native Trees for CT Landscapes (NWL)

Dr. Carl A. Salsedo will share which varieties of Connecticut’s native trees may work best in your surroundings. Connecticut’s native trees have evolved over thousands of years, and they are good sustainable choices for landscaping. They are also beneficial for insects, butterflies, and other pollinators, while providing habitat (food and shelter) for native wildlife. And native trees also increase our carbon footprint. All of this, while being beautiful and often requiring little maintenance.

Dr. Carl A. Salsedo Extension Educator-Sustainable and Environmental Horticulture has been with UConn Extension since 1975. He has worked with the nursery, green house, garden center and green industries as well as the Master Gardener programs. He completed a series on Connecticut Public Television entitled “Gardening with Nature,” five vignettes taped on location in his own yard in Burlington, Connecticut, that promote sustainable practices within the suburban landscape. He has lived and gardened on a Burlington hillside since 1977, creating a garden that is part of the Garden Conservatory’s Open Days Program. In 2011 he purchased a 54-acre farm in western Massachusetts, which is becoming his largest landscape project yet.
