THIS SUMMER, THE SHAKESPEARE BOOK CLUB HAS GONE VIRTUAL!
FOR INFORMATION ON ACCESSING MEETINGS via ZOOM, EMAIL: bard@westhartfordlibrary.org
Virtual programs by Capital Classics Theatre Company https://www.capitalclassics.org/ - The Shakespeare Summer Sessions are an extension of the very popular Shakespeare Book Club series at West Hartford Public Library.
All summer programs are live on select MONDAYS AT 7:00PM and feature Capital Classics Artistic Associate and Professor of Theatre Geoffrey Sheehan:
- Monday, July 6 at 7PM: Shakespeare Book Club discussion that we're calling “Shakespeare Strong” to explore where in Shakespeare’s writing we find inspiration, strength, hope and insight for our own life’s challenges.
Also... - Monday, July 20 at 7PM: Shakespeare in the Studio -“The Scenes We Thought We Knew” - Capital Classics veteran actors, led by Artistic Associate Geoffrey Sheehan, will open the rehearsal door on three of Shakespeare’s most famous scenes: Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s “screw your courage to the sticking place”; Hamlet and Ophelia’s “get thee to a nunnery”; and of course, Romeo and Juliet at the balcony. Part of the greatness of Shakespeare is the continued discovery of new insights to and appreciation of his understanding of human thought and behavior, and the incredibly effective construction of his dramatic scenes. As Geoffrey Sheehan likes to say: “Studying Shakespeare is like studying science - the deeper you look, the more amazing it becomes. There seems to be no bottom to his genius.” Capital Classics artists will apply creative exploration techniques used in their rehearsals to show how these discoveries are made, and how Shakespeare speaks to our contemporary artists and audiences.
- Monday, August 3 at 7PM: Shakespeare Book Club discussion of Shakespeare’s epic poems with readings from Capital Classics’ artists, too.
- Monday, August 17 at 7PM: We round out the summer with a "Contemporary Classics Conversation" about a new play that we are planning to stage in 2021.
